Cat are true obligate carnivores; in other words, they really need to eat meat. Cats can not process plant sources of taurine, which is an essential amino acid for them. This can only be sourced from meat for cats.

Cats that become deficient in arginine, (an amino acid that helps the body build protein and remove waste from the kidneys are some of its functions) can become deathly sick within hours.
